Breece D’J Pancake

Back when I was working at the smut factory, one of my great co-workers turned me on to Breece D’J Pancake. (The middle name “D’J” comes from a misprint of his middle initials by The Atlantic Monthly, where his first short story was published.) When I picked up the collection of his stories, I was blown away. Even though the book (his only book, a posthumous collection of his work titled The Stories of Breece D’J Pancake) was a just collection of shorts, I always include it as one of my favorite books. The combination of the style, language, lyricism of life in the South. It is disturbingly amazing writing.

Kurt Vonnegut once wrote, “”I give you my word of honor that he is merely the best writer, the most sincere writer I’ve ever read. What I suspect is that it hurt too much, was no fun at all to be that good. You and I will never know.”

His most well known story, Trilobites.

The Honored Dead

In The Dry

Here is a great piece in The Atlantic about the life and writings of Breece.
