Possible government definition of a "journalist"
There’s much action going on surrounding federal shield laws.
One of the things that needs to take place is a definition for a “journalist,” who would then be eligible for protection.
Here is the amendment with the suggested language:
(iii) obtains the information sought while working as a salaried employee of, or independent contractor for, an entity—
(I) that disseminates information by print, broadcast, cable, satellite, mechanical, photographic, electronic, or other means; and
(aa) publishes a newspaper, book, magazine, or other periodical;
(bb) operates a radio or television broadcast station, network, cable system, or satellite carrier, or a channel or programming service for any such station, network, system, or carrier;
(cc) operates a programming service; or
(dd) operates a news agency or wire service;
While not bad, it makes no provisions for bloggers or student journalists. I have to say I’m not entirely mad at bloggers being omitted (I agree there are some journalist bloggers, but most are not, despite what they think or proclaim), but I find omitting student journalists the bothersome and suspect.
