Japan’s Suicide Forest

Vice TV did a 20 minute documentary on the Aokigahara, or “Jukai,” suicide forest at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The video follows geologist Azusa Hayano through the forest. He has found about 100 bodies and each year there are about 100 suicides in the forest. He studies volcanic eruptions, but as an environmentalist, he considers the study of interaction between people and the environment part of his studies, but has yet to figure out way so many people come to the beautiful forest to end their life.

I don’t want to give away what happens throughout the video, but it’s both clear, and sad, that Hayano has been doing this for some time.
