As expected after getting out of the gate really strong, throw in a trip to Barcelona, and at times just being a little bit of a slacker, my lead started to dwindle to the point I was merely on pace, and then I fell behind. Way behind. We are talking less than a week and 9k words down. It was for reasons that were somewhere between being busy(?) and hitting the wall at 30k. What to do with the story, where to go, etc. I was needing almost 4,ooo words a day to finish on time and after 33,000 words, I’m not not going to make it.
I busted my ass all day yesterday getting other work done to be able to take today, Thanksgiving, to spend hours playing catch up. We did Thanksgiving dinner last night so the only thing to do today was go to the movies and to write. I am about halfway to today’s goal, so it’s time to take a break and see the movie. I will finish tonight, and I do have time Sunday set aside as emergency writing.
I also wanted to post two things that are making the rounds on the interwebs in regards to NaNo. They may be talking about it on the NaNo boards, but I stay away from there while trying to write. (I have enough distractions. Spending time talking to others about writing instead of actually writing seemed to be the ultimate in counter-productivity.)
There are two blogs that seem to have gotten a lot of traction and attention. One is an attack of NaNoWriMo by Laura Miller from Salon.com and the other is a defense of NaNoWriMo by Carolyn Kellogg of the LA Times Jacket Copy.
I also wanted to mention the soundtrack I am writing to. These are the artists or albums that I have listened to, almost exclusively and on repeat, as I have written: El-P’s weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxxx3, Portishead’s Portishead, CocoRosie’s La maison de mon rêve and various Stereolab songs.
So I am up to 37,350 words.
We will see how it goes down the stretch.
5 days to go…
